Make fish and chips at home for all the family with these simple breaded fish bits and homemade chips. Do the hard work once and reserve a batch of uncooked fish for the freezer – your future self will be thrilled. We’ve used the oven for this recipe but if you were doing a smaller batch, the air fryer would work really well.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to gas 6, 200°C, fan 180°C. Put the chips onto a large baking tray and toss with half the oil. Bake for 30-35 mins, turning twice, until golden, crisp and fluffy in the middle.
  2. Meanwhile, line 2 baking trays with nonstick baking paper. Put the flour and eggs into two separate bowls, then mix the breadcrumbs and herbs, if using, together in another. Dip the fish into the flour, then the egg, followed by the breadcrumbs, coating well in each. Lay the fish across the trays and brush with the remaining oil. Put 1 tray in the freezer and freeze until solid before transferring to a sandwich bag in the freezer to store.
  3. Add the other tray of fish fingers to the oven for the remaining 18-20 mins of the chip cooking time, turning them halfway through until crispy on the outside and cooked through.
  4. Cook the peas in a pan of boiling water for 2 mins, then drain and serve with the chips and fish fingers.
  • Tip: You could also blitz up leftover toast, cornflakes or Weetabix to coat the fish fingers in.
  • Freezing and defrosting guidelines

In order to enjoy optimum flavour and quality, frozen items are best used within 3 months of their freezing date. For more tips on freezing and defrosting food, read our article Love Your Freezer.

  • When weaning your baby, introduce allergenic foods one at a time and not before 6 months.
