David Williams - Observer Food Monthly 16/06/2013
Of the 2012 vintage, David Williams said: “Spain is often a happy hunting ground if you prefer rosé with a bit of punch, marked more by exuberant fruit than elegance, the kind of thing that’s robust enough to serve at barbecues. This example is full of ripe strawberries, given drinkability by a tangy, cranberry-like acidity.”
The winery name, Principe de Viana, literally means Prince of Viana which was a title bestowed on Carlos III of Spain’s grandson when he was born. This title was given to him in the same town, Tudela, where today the winery is located. The story was to take a twist of cruel fate as the Prince was denied his throne on the death of his mother with his father actually fighting a war against him, forcing him to flee Spain, travelling to Paris, Rome, Naples and Barcelona where he ended up living. His remains were burined here in Poblet where he became known as a hero and saint and defender of law and order. This legend was born in 1423.

This excellent example of rosé won the 2010 IWC Best Value Rosé and is typical of the Navarra region where it is made, in Spain. It is ripe, fruity and delicious with most foods and great drunk on its own. It is made using the latest developments in both vine growing and winemaking and this is why it expresses such delicious fruity aromas and flavours. These methods are also confirmed fully sustainable and look after the environment where growing and winemaking takes place. The winery itself is very involved in environmental best practice.
