The Rustenberg farm has a wine-growing history dating back to 1682, when Dutchman Roelof Pasman recognised its potential. Production thrived and a new cellar was built to cope with demand – wine has been bottled in that cellar for an unbroken period since 1892. The Barlows, have been at Rustenberg for over 70 years: the longest period any one family has owned the farm. Peter and Pamela – Murray Barlow’s grandparents – bought Rustenberg in 1941 and his father Simon took over 46 years later. Murray read a Masters in Oenology and is now cellarmaster at the age of 27.
You could fit the whole of Pomerol in Bordeaux into the Rustenberg estate so we really do have a unique set of climatic and geological conditions here. We get a lot of afternoon sun, and being more elevated we tend to ripen our fruit later than the rest of the Stellenbosch region by about two weeks. With dramatic mountains on all sides, this really is a beautiful place that all wine lovers should visit at least once.
