Tasting Notes

The Quinta do Bomfim follows the classic Dow style, smooth and deeply flavoured, with an intense nose of spices, violets and red fruits.

On the palate, tannins balance the fruit giving a firm structure, and with a long complex finish.

Expert Opinion

In the press...

Of the 2004 vintage, Jane MacQuitty said: "Fortify yourself before midnight mass with a gorgeous glass of 2004 Dow's Quinta Do Bomfim Vintage Port. Bomfim's punch and personality makes it one of the most thrilling of the great single quinta, or estate, vintage ports and gives you some of the flavour of a swanky "declared" year for a lot less money. Renowned for its grip and dry finish, this delicious vintage port is crammed with seductive, plummy, smoky, black-pepper spice."

Jane MacQuitty - Weekend, The Times 20/12/2014

Dow's is owned and managed by the fourth generation of the Symington family. Port producers since the 19th century. The family, whose experience dates back over 100 years, supervises all the vineyards, winemaking and ageing of this wine. Dow's owns two of the Douro's finest Quintas, Senhora da Ribeira and Bomfim. They were acquired in 1890 and 1896, making Dow's one of the first houses to invest in premium vineyards.

Regional info

Bomfim is a classic 'River Quinta' with several natural advantages. It is south-facing ensuring ideal exposure to the sun, its stony schist soil affords excellent drainage, allowing water to reach the vine's deep roots; the annual average rainfall is near perfect at 800mm; the altitude ranges from 120 to 340 metres above sea level, accommodating both gentle gradients lower down and progressively steeper slopes higher up the valley side.
