Regional Information

The region's chalky tuffeau limestone soil is perfect for the traditional method (méthode traditionnelle). The chalky subsoil (tuffeau), thanks to its porosity, allows for deep root growth and water retention throughout the summer. The soils are varied and produce very different characteristics: vines grown on sandy soils yield warm, low-acid wines and are the first to ripen. Clay-limestone plots can produce well-balanced wines, where ripeness can be encouraged while maintaining good acidity.

Vinification Details

Vinified in cellars in Vaudelnay, the Chenin, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Franc grapes are hand-harvested at optimal ripeness. The grapes are pressed whole (undestemmed) to minimize crushing. Each grape variety is vinified separately to preserve its unique character until blending at the end of winter.

History

Founded in 1811 by Jean-Baptiste Ackerman in Saumur, Maison Ackerman is the oldest fine sparkling wine (méthode traditionnelle) house in the Loire Valley, France. Today, Maison Ackerman blends its historic heritage with modern sustainable viticulture and oenotourism, famously hosting contemporary art installations within its monumental subterranean quarries.
