| Product Care Instructions | Prepare the soil: Onions prefer an open, sunny site and light, free-draining soil. If you have heavy soil, dig in grit and organic matter to improve drainage. Avoid very heavy or freshly manured soil. If soil is acidic, add Garden Lime well before planting or use a Pre-planting Onion, Shallot and Garlic Fertiliser. Planting: Plant sets with the tips showing at the soil surface, at the same level as they were grown in. Space onions 5–10cm (2–4in) apart with 25–30cm (10in–1ft) between rows. Aftercare: Water during dry weather and feed occasionally with a general liquid fertiliser. Keep weed-free. Stop watering and feeding once bulbs have swollen, and remove flower spikes when they appear. Harvest: Lift fresh in summer as soon as they reach a usable size. |
