Description

Sweet Italian basil (Ocimum basilicum) - fragrant, easy-to-grow culinary herb ideal for pesto, salads and Mediterranean dishes. Supplied as a 1L plug plant ready for containers, raised beds or greenhouse starts. Grows to about 30 cm, prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter and full sun to part shade. Prune above the second set of leaves to encourage branching and repeat when branches have 6–8 leaves; pinch out the centre shoot after six weeks to delay flowering and remove any flower heads. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, avoid waterlogging and protect from frost by harvesting before cold spells.

Product Care InstructionsPlant in well-drained soil or a quality potting mix. Grow in full sun or partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, avoiding waterlogging and overhead watering. Prune to above the second set of leaves to encourage branching; repeat pruning when branches have 6–8 leaves. After about 6 weeks, pinch off the centre shoot to prevent early flowering; cut off any flowers that do appear. Protect from frost and harvest before cold weather.
