Description

Squash 'Long Pie' is a heritage variety renowned for its sweet, savoury taste and uniquely elongated fruits, making it an ideal choice for baking and pies. How to Grow: - Sow indoors in April to late June on a warm windowsill in a propagator or in 7.5cm (3") pots in a greenhouse at 20–25°C (68–78°F). - Cover seeds with 2cm (¾") of quality compost. Germination typically occurs in 5–8 days. - Grow on seedlings and plant outdoors after the risk of frost has passed, spacing plants 90cm (36") apart. - Alternatively, sow directly outdoors in late May, placing 2 seeds per station and thinning to one plant once seedlings emerge. - This trailing variety grows to 40–50cm in height and requires fertile, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. - Regular watering and care of trailing stems are essential for strong, healthy fruit production. These plants produce a substantial harvest, and the fruits, which start green and ripen to a brilliant orange (reaching 30–60cm in length and weighing 2.5–4kg), store well to maintain peak flavour.
