Sowing Indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in a warm position (10–15 °C) and keep moist. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant 5 cm apart into trays of potting compost.

Growing On / Planting Out
Gradually accustom seedlings to outdoor conditions over 2–3 weeks before planting out to their cropping positions 60 cm apart during summer.

Sowing Outdoors
Prepare a seedbed of finely broken-down, weed-free soil. Sow seeds thinly in a shallow, pre-watered row. Lightly cover seeds with soil and keep moist until seedlings are established.

Transplanting
When seedlings have produced about four true leaves, transplant them to their cropping positions, allowing 60 cm each way between plants. Firm in the soil and keep well watered during dry spells.

Advice
Incorporate fertiliser into the ground before planting and firm plants into the soil to prevent ‘wind rock’ over winter. Cover with protective netting or fleece to prevent damage from birds and insects.
