Regional Information

The wine-growing area is limited to the north by the Loire and extends to the south over clay-limestone slopes. The hills decrease in altitude as one moves away from the Loire. The climate is temperate oceanic, with natural protection from the humid winds of the Mauges Massif. The Loire and its tributaries, which shape the landscape of Saumur, provide natural thermal regulation.

Vinification Details

First fermentation in vats or barrels, followed by a second fermentation in the bottle called "Prise de Mousse". The bottles are stored in the cellar for a minimum of 9 months on the lees. Ridding, disgorgement and dosage complete the process of the traditional method. These last steps consist of removing the deposit from the bottle that has formed during the ageing process and "dosing" the wine according to the desired level of sweetness.

History

Founded in 1864, Gratien & Meyer was born from the association of two wine figures: Alfred Gratien, a man of tradition, and Jean-Albert Meyer, a wine enthusiast. From this unique encounter was born the house of Gratien & Meyer in Saumur (Loire Valley, France), in the heart of an exceptional heritage nestled on the slopes of the luminous Vallée des Rois. In addition to being key in the production of sparkling wines from Loire, Gratien & Meyer creates convivial moments and and true emotions with all.
