Regional Information

Our vineyards grow on the slopes of the Olifantsberg Mountain. The altitude makes for vast fluctuation between day and night temperatures, resulting in a slow, even ripening and layered fruit. The soils are ancient and weathered, with just enough water lurking deep beneath the hard surface. A strong wind batters the vines year-long. This is a positive struggle though. Grape varieties are chosen for their ability to naturally thrive in these conditions.

History

Above the Breede River on Northwest facing slopes of the Brandwacht Mountains is the Olifantsberg Family Vineyards. The farm was bought in 2003 and all that grew were two small vineyards of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. 2004 saw the first production of wine under the Olifantsberg label in the winery of a wine cooperative. The estate celebrated their first vintage a year later and thereafter in 2007 converted a glass blowing studio into a cellar to produce their own wine in.
