Perfect result, highly recommended
The only other time I cooked a whole duck was a complete disaster; the smell of smoking fat totally put me off eating it, & I've kept to restaurant-prepared duck for the last 30 years! I couldn't resist trying this well-priced item though & was amazed at the perfect results achieved this time around. My current oven is quite fierce, so I use fan oven temperature settings or even a few degrees under that, so this was cooked at 175` rather than the indicated 200`. I also took the precaution of pinning/skewering the wings close to the body, so the tips wouldn't blacken, and also loosely placing foil over the bird for the first 30 minutes. After another 15 minutes of cooking, to crisp up the now uncovered skin, I switched the oven off but left the door closed, I removed it after another 30 or so minutes (so roughly 20 minutes longer than suggested but at lower heat) the meat was falling off the bone & at just the right temperature to eat ( with hoisin sauce, spring onion garnish & egg fried rice). It was delicious, tender, with a good flavour & most of the fat melted into the tray underneath, with the added bonus of giblets to make a tasty gravy, if desired. Definitely worth a try, unless this was a pure fluke - the combination of a good-quality bird cooked using foil, a slightly lowered temperature but extended cooking time. I've already ordered another one so we'll see but such a good result was a delightful change from a large number of recent disappointing changes to recipes, poorer quality goods AND less offers. My faith has somewhat been restored but many other reviews are echoing similar recent disappointments with Tesco's dropping standards
Tasty, tender and good value.
It was very tasty, tender and skin was crispy. Too much meat for 2 to eat in one go so used the rest to make a pie! The giblets made a very good stock so we had an excellent port and orange sauce. Very disappointed that we can't buy another one this week, no idea why it is now unavailable.
Very tasty. Got 14 Chinese duck pancakes out of it
Very tasty. Got 14 Chinese duck pancakes out of it. Good enough for a fiver.
Not a generous meal
Was attracted by the price and the fact that it should serve 4 - 6. No way, probably more like 2 - 3. Loads of bone skin and fat and not much meat. What there was was delicious but only got one meagre meal and a couple of duck pancakes out of it. If you're gonna buy, buy 2 for safety.
