Description

Malbec, Merlot and Mourvèdre - Red South African WineMalbec, Merlot and Mourvèdre grapes naturally fermented separately in open barrels liberating individual traits and origin and variety.Blended before maturation in big French oak barrels respecting natural varietal character. Only 10 barrels produced this vintage.Every so often, small parcels of extraordinary grapes capture the soul of their unique vineyard origins and transcend the mere science of routine winemaking practice deserving exciting exploration and experimentation in our cellar. This multi-faceted wine is an original composition of Malbec, Merlot and Mourvèdre seldom found together as a blend, but a fascinating enigma rising from the gutsy artistry of our winemaker. Sumptuous yet svelte with a core of intense blackcurrants and soft pastille cherry fruit, savoury earthy edges and all spice intrigue cradle by well tethered gentle oak all in perfect unity on an overtly fruity and fresh finish.

A dense and concentrated wine, with complex red and black fruit with spice supported by oak and seamless, velvety tannins. The wine has a lovely freshness on the finish.

Vinification Details

Fermentation technique: The three components are fermented separately in open fermenters. 100% natural fermentation took place at 25 - 28ºC The wine was removed from skins straight after fermentation. Oak/lees treatment: The wine was matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels.

History

Named in honour of our founder Bernard Podlashuk, The Bernard Series is Bellingham’s premium range of extraordinary wines.

Regional Information

The fruit comes from specific sites: Merlot from the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch (weathered granite), the Mourvedre from Achter Paarl (dirty sandstone soils) and bush vine Malbec from Somerset West (shale and sandstone mixed soils).
