Sports nutrition guide

If you're new to sports nutrition, then read our simple FAQ's below to find the answers to the most commonly asked questions about using supplements to get faster and better results from your training.

What do the different types of protein do?

Whey protein is a fast-absorbing source of protein made up of BCAAs (Brand Chain Amino Acids) to support lean muscle repair and growth.

  • Whey protein isolate and hydrolysed whey protein are purer and more concentrated forms of whey protein containing very little (if any) fat and lactose. Digestion is therefore much simpler and faster. They are the faster digested, so our bodies will absorb more of the product and start the rebuilding of our muscles after an intense training quicker.
  • Soy protein is a low fat, low cholesterol and vegetarian protein source.
  • Egg protein is a high quality lactose-free protein source.
  • Casein is a slow digesting protein source and is ideal to take before bed.

Is sports nutrition safe and legal?

Yes. Sports nutrition is safe and is legal if you live in the UK. Products sold in the UK are subject to stringent regulations to make sure they only contain safe ingredients. However, you may want to choose a brand that tests all their products for purity to guarantee best results.

I am under 16 years of age - can I use sports nutrition?

Although sports nutrition products are very safe, they have not been tested on children and we therefore do not recommend that anyone under the age of 16 use sports nutrition. We do not sell products to anyone below this age.

Is sports nutrition for men and women?

Yes. Sports nutrition can be used by both men and women to enhance exercise, performance and support any body goal. Sports nutrition simply helps you get faster and better results - no matter which sex you are. From weight loss, to body sculpting, muscle growth and energy, there is the right sports nutrition product for you in our ranges.

What is creatine?

Creatine is a nutrient naturally found in your muscles and can be obtained in small amounts from foods like steak and pork. It is essential for producing powerful muscle contractions such as during weight training and sprinting, but creatine stores are quickly depleted, leading to fatigue. Creatine supplements can increase creatine stores and therefore boost power, endurance and training intensity. Creatine is supported by extensive research to be very safe and effective.

What are whey protein shakes?

Whey protein shakes contain a very concentrated source of the milk protein, 'whey'. Whey protein is great for anyone who exercises intensely, because it has a very fast digestion speed and is used very efficiently by the body to support fast muscle repair, lean growth and immune defences. Because whey protein is so low in lactose, digests easily and is very low in fat and carbohydrates, it's an extremely popular and effective way to boost your protein intake. Whey protein is ideal between/with meals and before and after exercise.

What are micellar casein shakes?

Micellar casein protein shakes contain a very concentrated source of the milk protein, 'casein'. Casein protein has a slow digestion speed that means it's a popular protein to consume as a snack before sleeping, to support sustained muscle repair and help to avoid muscle breakdown.

When should I take protein shakes and bars?

Protein shakes, bars and meal replacement shakes are very versatile and can be consumed at any time of the day to support your needs and goals. Great times include between main meals, before and after exercise and before bed.

Is it important to eat before and after a workout?

Yes. Research shows that eating before and after exercise can boost training intensity, recovery and the results you get from regular workouts. Protein is very important, so make sure you eat a protein rich snack before and after training. Whey protein is ideal at these times before it's very easy to digest and reaches your muscles quickly. You'll also find a range of products designed specifically for before and after training.

Can I use sports nutrition instead of regular food?

No. It's important to use sports nutrition as a supplement to a balanced and healthy diet. However, by adding sports nutrition to a good diet, you can boost your results thanks to the concentrated nutrients in sports nutrition products. You can also use a good quality meal replacement shake as a healthy way to typically replace one of your regular meals.

Should I take sports nutrition on rest days?

Ideally, yes. Your body repairs, refuels and adapts when you're resting, so good nutrition such as sufficient protein, energy and carbohydrates is just as important on these days. However, always check each product for recommended use.

Is sports nutrition good value??
