Finding the right hair removal solution for you

Each woman's body is different, so there is no 'one size fits all' method of hair removal. It is best to think about your own personal preferences. Some of the key considerations include budget, how sensitive your skin is, and how quickly the hair will grow back. Your skin type and hair colour will also determine the best treatments for you.

Lady's shavers

The most straightforward and cost-effective way to get rid of hair - shaving is an ever popular choice. Shaving is quick and easy and you can opt for either an electrical shaver, or a wet shave for a closer result.

However, shaving can cause irritation as well as cuts and abrasion. This is especially true if you have sensitive skin. Electric shavers are often gentler than wet shaving, but won't have the same results - and as such will need to be done more frequently. Electric shavers tend to be battery powered or rechargeable.

Most ladies electric shavers can be used wet or dry, so they are perfect when you're in the bath or shower. There are also lots of gels and lubricants to make the shaving process easier on your skin. The main downside to shaving is that the hair will grow back quite quickly.

Epilating is a great way to keep the hair away for up to three weeks. By utilising dozens of tiny tweezers they pull the hairs straight from the follicle. An added bonus is that with repeated use the hair grows back weaker and thinner. There is also no preparation time involved and they are extremely easy to use, helping prevent ingrown hairs.

The downside is that they can be even more painful than waxing, as each individual hair is pulled out. The process takes longer than waxing, and a good quality epilator can be a bit more expensive too.

As epilators target the hairs themselves they are a good choice for those with extra-sensitive skin who don't mind a little sting every few months.

Laser hair removal

Take advantage of cutting-edge technology to rid yourself of unwanted hair. Once a process only carried out by expensive clinics, the world of laser hair removal has opened up to consumers. Home-based lasers are now widely available, and come in a range of models from a variety of manufacturers.

Laser hair removal is effective, quick, and keeps the hair away for long periods. If it is used repeatedly over a period of time it can even lead to permanent hair loss in the treated areas.

The technique is much more effective for women with lighter skin and darker brown or black hair. The process still works for those with lighter hair, but it is not as potent a solution and it will take longer before you see results. It offers little benefit for those with white or grey hair.

As the laser targets the melanin (pigment) in your skin the process is risky for women with darker skin, and can lead to depigmentation. With the technology improving all the time there are now options out there for those with darker skin, but always make sure you research the product before use.

As this has become a popular method to remove hair at home, there are plenty of choices in terms of what model to buy. Home lasers can be either battery or mains powered, or include their own rechargeable battery. Laser hair removers are a more expensive option, but they are relatively pain-free and can lead to savings over a longer period of time when compared to the constant costs of shaving and waxing.

Intense pulsed light

Often confused with laser removal, intense pulsed light (IPL) is a light not a laser. It emits a full-spectrum light that targets your hair at the root. The light is less focused than a laser and as such it is less effective on deeper thicker hair.

IPL was originally developed to help minimise skin blemishes, and as such it can potentially help lead to cleaner skin. However, as with laser hair removal, there are risks associated with use on darker skin tones, so always check the individual products. While far less painful than waxing or epilating, some users find that IPL process can be slightly more uncomfortable than laser removal.

As with laser removal, IPL has a higher upfront cost than waxing or shaving. But, since repeated use can reduce the prominence of unwanted hair - even permanently - it's best to take this into consideration when thinking about waxing and shaving costs over an extended period.

The effectiveness of IPL is limited to those with dark hair and light skin. It can prove to be a good tool for removing unwanted hair. IPL consumer products come in mains powered, battery operated, and rechargeable options, to offer extra flexibility for consumers.

One thing to think about when considering both IPL and laser therapy is that you haven't recently received a tan. If you have had a great deal of sun exposure within the previous month, IPL and laser treatment can damage the pigments of the skin and cause scarring. This applies to both being out in the sun and tanning salons as well.

The best hair removal option for you

If you have light skin and dark hair, laser treatments or IPL are the best options for you. While the equipment may look expensive, if you are planning on using it regularly it could end up saving you money in the long term when compared to waxing or shaving.

If you have blonde or red hair these modern technologies will be less effective, and if you have white or grey hair you may see little effect at all. This means waxing, epilating, or shaving may be the best options for your hair removal needs.

If you have darker skin, laser removal and IPL can work but be sure to fully research the products before you buy. The technology is constantly improving, so look out for emerging products more suited for women with darker skin tones and darker hair.

IPL and laser removal are better for those with sensitive skin, but if they are not best suited to your hair and skin colour it may be best to opt for an epilator. While epilators can cause minor discomfort they are gentler on your skin than waxing or shaving.
