Freixenet Cellar Tour

We would be delighted to welcome you personally to our cellars for a guided tour. After a brief audiovisual presentation on the company's history, our guided visit begins through the oldest part of the cellars, excavated in 1922. Here, our guides will explain the process of creating cava and how technology has gradually been incorporated into the méthode traditionnelle. Following this, visitors will ride a miniature train to view the latest enlargements to our cellar, blending tradition and state-of-the-art technology harmoniously. After this route, we come to the tasting room, where you'll sample the company's different caves (persons aged over eighteen only). The visit terminates at our "Dolores Ferrer" shop. We live and breath bubbles

In addition, the way the wines are made make Freixenet stand apart. Unlike many other sparkling wines, Freixenet sparkling wine is made using the traditional method. This double fermentation process has been used for centuries to make sparkling wines. It ensures the highest quality wines with more layers of complexity and fruit as well as better and more bubbles throughout the wine.

Brut (try Cordon Negro) - very dry and crisp and superbly refreshing.

Seco (try Cordon Rosado) - still dry, but a touch of extra sweetness makes the fruity flavours sparkle.

Semi-Seco (try Cordon Oro) - medium sweet style for easy drinking - a really feel-good bubbly style.

The Collection

The colour behind the bubble:

Cordon Negro

The most popular wine in the collection, it has a refreshing quality, with citrus fruit and a dry finish. That makes it the perfect choice for almost any occasion, including working well with fish and shellfish and light snacks. A great all-rounder.

Cordon Oro

The newest addition to the collection, this wine has a touch of sweetness, so it caters for most palates and occasions. Its golden colour shines through a smooth and fruity character with an attractive floral finish. It works beautifully as an aperitif, or with a wide range of foods including dips, pasta and even desserts.

Elyssia Gran Cuvee

For the discerning palate, this wine is aged for 15 months in the cellars of Freixenet to deliver a clean, crisp acidity and a long balanced finish. With delicate ripe fruit flavours, this wine is perfect for savouring.

Elyssia Pinot Noir

With an unmistakable appearance, this wine zings with colour and the tastes of the summer. Red ripe fruits of raspberries, cherries and redcurrants abound, but these are balanced with acidity so the finish is a long and refreshing one.

Vintage Especial

A light-bodied wine with a freshness and modern simplicity. Surprisingly pale and light in colour, it is packed with fruit flavours, from citrus to ripe tropical fruits and is a great choice for apperitifs or with light fish dishes.

Vintage Especial Rosado

A lively star bright, pink wine with wonderful red and black fruit flavour, but that retains a lightness that creates a soft and light finish on the palate. It's a very flexible wine that works well for apperitifs or with light dishes, rice and pasta.

Extra Vintage Brut

A crisp, refreshing wine that typifies the Penedes region, with flavours of fresh citrus, ripe melon and peach, with a fine finish. Enjoy it on its own or with a range of light foods like grilled white fish and try it with soft cheese.

Extra Vintage Brut Rosado

A delightful pale strawberry colour, this vintage sparkling rosé is refreshingly dry and crisp, yet perfectly balanced with the soft aromas and flavours of ripe summer fruits, which linger pleasingly on the finish. A versatile choice, this Cava is ideal as an aperitif or a celebratory drink, and it also makes an excellent partner to most dishes.

Mia Moscato

A charming addition to the collection, it's a fresh and vibrant choice - with notes of white flowers, peach and apricot. It has a lower alcohol content but manages to balance acidity and sweetness with aplomb and will suit light savo

History and Heritage

Freixenet was born from the union of two Spanish families with a lengthy history in winemaking: the Ferrers, owners of La Freixeneda, a 13th-century estate in Sant Quintí de Mediona in the heart of Alt Penedès, and the Salas, winemakers and founders of Casa Sala in 1861, the first wine exporters in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia.

José Ferrer Sala typifies the spirit of Freixenet. He entered the business as a young man of 22, determined to build on the foundation created by his parents and realise his father's dreams for the company.

Charismatic, savvy and sharp, José would take the business to new heights over the next 50 years, playing a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the company and championing innovation within Spain's Cava industry.

Under his watch, Freixenet was the first company in Spain to pneumatically press grapes and use refrigerated vats to control fermentation. And he also created the iconic black Cordon Negro bottle that is still used by the company today.

The méthode traditionelle process or traditional method came into use in Catalunya in the 1870s.

Although transplanted from the Champagne region of France, it was in Catalunya that the process was continually modernised by industrious local vintners over the next century. In fact, the Freixenet winery is credited with the development of new technologies that made the process more efficient and consistent to the point that the Champenois have adopted a number of Catalan inventions to improve their own Champagne production.

Generations of local grape growers continue to supply Freixenet, with the same care and attention that has been 150 years in the making.
