Hesperis matronalis, commonly known as Sweet Rocket, is a traditional cottage garden favourite prized for its richly scented blooms and naturalising habit. From May to July, it produces tall, elegant stems carrying clusters of fragrant flowers in soft lilac to purple tones. These long-lasting blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making this an ideal addition to wildlife-friendly planting schemes.

Although classed as a biennial or short-lived perennial, Hesperis matronalis readily self-seeds, creating beautiful drifts that return year after year. It thrives in herbaceous borders, wildflower gardens, and informal planting schemes, where its scent fills the air on warm summer evenings. An excellent cut flower, it’s perfect for bringing the beauty and perfume of the garden indoors.

Feeding: Not fussy, but benefits from light feeding in early spring.
