Description

Marshalls Garden 'Batter' F1 is an excellent maincrop leek that produces long, straight white shanks, attractive green foliage and a mild flavour with good disease and weather tolerance. Germination takes about 2–3 weeks and plants reach an expected height of around 45cm. Sow indoors Jan–Feb: thinly into pre-watered seed trays 1cm (½in) deep, place in warmth of 10–15°C (50–60°F) and keep moist. Plant out Apr–May when 20cm (8in) tall into holes 15cm (6in) deep, fill with water, spacing plants 15–20cm (6–8in) apart and rows 25–30cm (10–12in) apart. Sow outdoors Mar–Apr: thinly into pre-watered soil 1cm (½in) deep in rows 15cm (6in) apart and keep soil moist. Best grown in light, well-drained fertile soil rich in organic matter with partial sun. To ensure a long white shaft, draw up soil around plants as they develop and keep well watered and fed.
