Soy glazed steak with cabbage

Treat the family to a steak dinner with this Chinese-inspired soy glazed steak. Brush the steaks with a sticky soy marinade and serve with a sweet chilli cabbage stir-fry for an easy meal in minutes.

Ingredients

  • 1tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, thickly sliced
  • 1 carrot, sliced into thin ribbons
  • 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced
  • 1 small Savoy cabbage, cored and thinly shredded
  • 3 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • splash sesame oil
  • 4 steaks

For the soy glaze

  • 1½tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 100g fresh ginger sliced
  • 1tbsp honey

Method

  1. Heat the oil in a wok until hot. Add the onion, carrot and garlic and stir-fry for 5 minutes. Add the cabbage and 2 tbsp water, then cook for 2-3 minutes. Add the sweet chilli sauce and sesame oil and stir-fry for 1 minute more.
  2. Meanwhile, heat a heavy-based frying pan or a griddle pan over a high heat. Combine the glaze ingredients and brush over the steaks until well coated. Sizzle the steaks for 2 minutes on each side, until cooked through but still pink in the middle, or until done to your liking. Remove the meat from the pan and leave to rest on a warm plate for 2 minutes. Thinly slice the steaks and serve with the stir-fried vegetables.
