• has had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine previously
• is under 60 years of age

£240 for a single vaccination.

What to expect from your appointment

You’ll receive a single vaccination from a trained Tesco pharmacist in a private consultation room. It will be given in your upper arm, and the appointment will take around 20 minutes.

What is RSV?

Respiratory syncytial virus is a highly contagious virus that can cause serious respiratory illness. It is mainly spread through coughing and sneezing, and contact with an infected person or contaminated surface.

RSV infections usually get better by themselves, but can cause serious respiratory illness in babies, older adults and people with chronic medical conditions or risk factors.

Common symptoms

Typical symptoms can include:

• runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion
• cough
• fever
• tiredness and fatigue

How well does the RSV vaccination work?

The RSV vaccine is highly effective, preventing approximately 82% of RSV-related hospitalisations in people aged 75–79 and offering strong protection to other older adults and newborns through maternal vaccination. In clinical trials, the vaccine showed over 80% efficacy in reducing RSV-associated lower respiratory tract illness in adults and infants.

Can I have a vaccination if I feel unwell?

If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, wait until you're feeling better before having your vaccination.

Are there any side effects from the vaccine?

The most common side effects of the RSV vaccine are mild and get better within a few days. They can include:

• tiredness
• headache
• pain or tenderness at the injection site
• muscle pain

Who is at risk?

As you age, your immune system weakens, leaving adults 60 years and older, especially those with a chronic medical condition, vulnerable to a serious case of RSV.

For people at highest risk, the consequences of RSV include:

• serious illness
• severe lung infections, pneumonia and other serious respiratory complications
• hospitalisation

Am I eligible for a free NHS vaccination?

In England, a free NHS RSV vaccination is available if you are:

• 28 weeks pregnant or more – the vaccine is recommended during every pregnancy to help protect your baby after they're born
• aged 75–79
• turned 80 years old after 1 September 2024

Is there anything else I need to know about my appointment?

The vaccination will be given in the upper arm, so it’s helpful to wear short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up.
