Who is this service suitable for?

The service is suitable for customers aged 18 years and over.

This service is not suitable for anyone who's:

• Pregnant or breastfeeding
• Currently having chemotherapy or radiotherapy
• Had a severe allergic reaction to any component of Prevnar 20 or to diphtheria toxoid previously

Eligibility criteria apply.  Subject to availability in selected stores only. Excludes NI.  All services are at the discretion of the pharmacist.  Clubcard/app required to earn points.

How much does the service cost?

£90 for a single vaccination which provides lasting protection.  

You can earn Clubcard points with this service (£1 spent = 1 point). Clubcard/app required.

What to expect from your appointment

You’ll receive a single vaccination from a trained Tesco pharmacist in a private consultation room. It will be given in your upper arm, and the appointment will take around 20 minutes.

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a type of chest infection.

The tiny air sacs in the lungs become inflamed and fill with fluid, making it harder to breathe. Pneumonia can cause serious illness.

The most common cause of pneumonia is bacterial or viral infection. It can be spread from person to person through coughing and sneezing.

Flu is one of the most common causes of viral pneumonia in adults and post-flu complications can also cause bacterial pneumonia. COVID-19 can also cause lung complications such as pneumonia.

Common symptoms

Symptoms of pneumonia can start suddenly or develop gradually over a few days.

They include:

• a cough – you may cough up yellow or green mucus (phlegm)
• shortness of breath
• a high temperature
• chest pain
• an aching body
• feeling very tired 
• loss of appetite
• making wheezing noises when you breathe
• feeling confused – this is common in older people

How well does the pneumonia vaccination work?

The pneumonia vaccine is very effective. One dose of Prevnar 20 provides lasting protection against 20 strains of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia and invasive pneumococcal disease

Can I have a vaccination if I feel unwell?

If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, wait until you're feeling better before having your vaccination.

Are there any side effects from the vaccine?

The most common side effects of the pneumonia vaccine are mild and get better within a few days.

They can include:

• Headache
• Joint pain and muscle pain
• Tiredness
• Pain or tenderness at the injection site

Who is at risk?

• Pneumonia is more common and can be more serious in: 
• People aged 50 or older. People in this age group are at an over 6 times greater risk of being seriously ill with pneumococcal pneumonia.*
• People with other health conditions, such as asthma, cystic fibrosis, or a heart, kidney or liver condition
• People with a weakened immune system

Am I eligible for a free NHS vaccination?

People over the age of 65 are eligible for a free NHS pneumonia vaccination.

If you've already been vaccinated with another pneumococcal vaccine like PCV13 or PCV15, ask our pharmacist about the additional protection that Prevnar 20 could provide.

Is there anything else I need to know about my appointment?

The vaccination will be given in the upper arm, so it’s helpful to wear short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up.
