Who is this service suitable for?
This service is suitable for people who are:
- aged 1 year and over who require protection against meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y.
- visiting high-risk areas.
- young people starting university.
Suitability is assessed during a consultation with a pharmacist, taking into account age, travel plans and medical history.
For Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, the MenACWY vaccine must be administered at least 10 days before arrival, and a valid vaccination certificate is required for entry. Tesco Pharmacy will provide a vaccination certificate following vaccination.
This service is not suitable for anyone who's had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of a Meningitis ACWY vaccine or to one of its ingredients previously.

How much does the service cost?
£50 for a single vaccination.
You can earn Clubcard points with this service (£1 spent = 1 point). Clubcard/app required.
What to expect from your appointment
You’ll receive a single vaccination from a trained Tesco pharmacist in a private consultation room. It will be given in your upper arm, and the appointment will take around 20 minutes.
What is Meningitis ACWY?
Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord.
Meningitis can be very serious if not treated quickly. It can cause life-threatening sepsis and result in permanent damage to the brain or nerves.
How well does the Meningitis ACWY vaccination work?
The Meningitis ACWY vaccine may not always stop you catching Meningitis ACWY, but it significantly reduces your chance of severe illness and hospitalisation, particularly if you're in a higher-risk group.
Can I have a vaccination if I feel unwell?
If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, wait until you're feeling better before having your vaccination.
Are there any side effects from the vaccine?
Most effects following vaccination are mild and short-lived.
The most common side effects are:
- Pain and swelling at the injection site
- Feeling tired
- Headache
- General aches or mild flu-like symptoms
Who is at risk?
It can affect anyone, but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.
For travellers to high-risk countries, vaccination should be considered before travel.
Am I eligible for a free NHS vaccination?
The NHS eligibility criteria may change, but currently you can get a NHS Meningitis ACWY vaccination if you are:
- aged 14 years old
- sixth formers and 'fresher' students going to university for the first time.
- aged of 25 years old and not been vaccinated previously.
Is there anything else I need to know about my appointment?
The vaccination will be given in the upper arm, so it’s helpful to wear short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up.
