What is COVID-19?
Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Common symptoms
The main symptoms of COVID-19 include a high temperature, a new and continuous cough, a loss of the sense of smell or taste, a sore throat, fatigue and headache.
How well does the COVID-19 vaccination work?
The COVID-19 vaccine may not always stop you catching COVID-19, but it significantly reduces your chance of severe illness and hospitalisation, particularly if you're in a higher-risk group.
Can I have a vaccination if I feel unwell?
If you have a high temperature or feel unwell, wait until you're feeling better before having your vaccination.
Are there any side effects from the vaccine?
Most effects following vaccination are mild and short-lived.
The most common side effects are:
- pain and swelling at the injection site
- feeling tired
- headache
- general aches or mild flu-like symptoms
Who is at risk?
COVID-19 can be more than just a bad cold. It can lead to days off work (or school) and cause more serious health complications, even in healthy people.
By getting vaccinated, you help protect those around you who are more vulnerable to complications arising from COVID-19, like the elderly, young children, and people with certain health conditions.
Am I eligible for a free NHS vaccination?
The NHS eligibility criteria may change, but currently you can get a NHS Covid-19 vaccination if you are
- aged 75 and older
- residents in care homes for older adults
- aged 6 months and over with a weakened immune system (immunosuppressed)
Is there anything else I need to know about my appointment?
The vaccination will be given in the upper arm, so it’s helpful to wear short sleeves or loose sleeves that can be rolled up.
