Freeing up slots

There’s still high demand for our online service, so we’d encourage you to shop in-store if you’re able to do so, where we have a number of safety measures in place.

To help more people shop in-store at times that are quieter or more convenient, we've extended the opening hours in many of our shops, although the majority remain closed overnight. To find the latest opening hours for your local store, please visit our store locator.

We’ve more than doubled the number of online slots to 1.5 million each week. This is to help anyone who’s unable to shop in‐store – especially our most vulnerable customers – so they can access our online service. Over the last months, we’ve delivered more orders than ever before, and we’ll continue to increase the number of online slots available.

Helping the most vulnerable get food deliveries.

For those who are self-isolating

Our deliveries are continuing, and we’ll deliver to customers in self-isolation. You can let us know that you’re in self-isolation when you order (using the delivery notes box) or let the driver know at the door so that they can deliver safely.

We’ve now removed all tray liners and non-essential plastic bags from our online orders. So you may find it useful to have your own carrier bags or boxes ready at the door to make it easier to move your shopping from our trays into your home. For health and safety reasons, we’ll continue to use red plastic bags for meat and some household cleaning products.

Our drivers have also been told how to check a customer’s age during these circumstances. For example, they may ask you to verify your age by showing them proof of identification, where possible, either from a distance or through a window/glass.

Drivers may have to remove any age-restricted products from your order and return them to store for a refund if they can’t verify your age or where local restrictions prevent the delivery of alcohol.

Find out about how we're keeping our customers and colleagues safe, making sure everyone has access to food, and giving vulnerable customers and NHS workers time to get their essentials.

Shopping safely in-store

Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve focused on ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment. Our safety measures are there to protect you and our colleagues, as we all follow the latest government guidance. Now that strict national lockdown measures are in place again, we wanted to share an update on some of the ways we’re supporting you to shop safely.

It’s a legal requirement to wear a face covering in our stores​
To protect our colleagues and customers, we won’t let anyone into our stores who isn’t wearing a face covering, unless they’re exempt in line with government guidance. Please also make sure that you wear your face covering correctly – covering your mouth and your nose.

Shop alone​
Please shop alone unless you’re a carer or with children. We also encourage you to shop only when you need to, in line with government guidance to stay at home.

One–in, one–out
We continue to limit the number of people in our stores and we have a ‘one–in, one–out‘ system in place to ensure social distancing.

Wait for the green light
We have introduced a traffic light system at more than 1,300 of our store entrances. The system monitors numbers and will light up green when you can safely enter. If the light is red, then the limit has been reached and our colleagues will ask you to join a queue outside the store.

Sanitise your hands, basket and trolley
We have cleaning stations in our stores so that you can sanitise your trolley or basket, and you‘ll find plenty of hand sanitiser around the store to use while you shop.

Removal of the one-way system in stores
We’ve been listening to customer feedback and looking at how our social distancing measures are working. We decided to remove the one-way system in stores to reduce the bottlenecks that they can cause – which can have the knock-on effect of keeping customers in-store for longer. But we’re continually monitoring the situation and will make any necessary changes, while keeping the safety of our customers and colleagues front of mind.

If you need support

If you or anyone you know needs a little extra help getting access to food, there are several schemes and organisations that can provide support.

  • If you need emergency support, please go to the End Child Food Poverty website to find help in your local area.
  • If your child normally qualifies for free school meals during term time, you can get Free School Meal vouchers through your child's school. All Tesco stores accept these vouchers.
  • Healthy Start is a government scheme to help improve the health of pregnant women and families on benefits and tax credits. Under the scheme, eligible families are provided with vouchers every week to spend on a range of food. We also provide an additional £1 coupon for fresh fruit and vegetables for customers using Healthy Start vouchers. For information and to check eligibility, go to the Healthy Start website. All Tesco stores accept Healthy Start vouchers.
  • Our charity partner FareShare works with 11,000 charities to provide food to those who need it. If you need support, find more information on their website.
  • The Trussell Trust, another of our charity partners, runs a network of food banks providing food and support to families and individuals who need it. Find more information on the help that's available on the Trussell Trust website.
  • For help with healthy and affordable meal planning, download a free ‘Cook with Jack’ cookbook.
  • The Tesco Bags of Help scheme will continue to support thousands of UK families and charity groups with the funding needed to provide food and resources.

Priority hours

We’re continuing our dedicated hours for vulnerable customers. Please check our store locator for your local store’s hours.

Some of our stores open an hour early on Sundays, at 9am. This first hour is just for browsing, so you’ll only be able to check out your shopping from 10am.

As the NHS continue to work hard each day, we’d like to extend the thank you for all they are doing.

We’re giving NHS, emergency service, and care workers priority entry to our stores to help them shop when they have the time. If there’s a queue at the front of the store, please come to the front with your valid ID to enter.

We've been a long-term partner of the British Red Cross, providing ongoing practical support when local communities need it the most.
