Is your baby ready for weaning?
Weaning is your baby’s first step towards eating solid food and isn’t recommended until they’re about 6 months old. If your baby’s around this age and they can sit up well and keep their head steady – and they have good hand-eye-mouth coordination, they may be ready for their first spoonful.
Feeding issues
It's natural to worry when your little one has a feeding issue, but just as grown-ups can get indigestion, reflux and have allergies, so can babies. If you have any concerns, ask your healthcare professional for advice.

Colic
No one knows exactly what causes colic, one theory is that it's because the digestive system of some babies is still maturing

Reflux and regurgitation
Common symptoms include constant or sudden crying when feeding, the regular bringing up of milk during or after feeds, lots of hiccups, coughing or refusing feeds, or gulping after burping or feeding

Wind
Babies can swallow a lot of air during feeding which can lead to uncomfortable, gassy tummies. So remember to wind them after each feed.

Cows' milk allergy
This can cause symptoms such as rashes, diarrhoea and eczema. Please see your GP if you think your baby has an allergy.

Adventures in weaning
Introducing your baby to their first foods is a fun and messy time. It's recommended to wait until they're 6 months of age before starting weaning. The key is to be patient; it can take a lot of spoonfuls before your baby masters their new eating skills.

Stage 1: smooth and plain
The start of weaning is all about introducing new tastes and textures with smooth and simple purées of veg or fruit

Stage 2: mashed and lumps
Once your baby can manage purées quite happily, you can try adding a little more texture and new flavour combinations

Stage 3: new textures
Continue your baby's weaning journey by having fun with a variety of finger foods, discovering new tastes and textures along the way, and supporting them as they grow.

Stage 4: toddler snacks
When your little one only has a little tummy, they need tasty, bite-sized snacks to top them up and keep them going from morning to afternoon. For little ones growing up, there’s a range of fun shapes and exciting flavours to explore to help fuel happy days.
Did you know, you can use cows' milk in your baby's food from 6 months?
You can mix it into your baby's food from around 6 months of age, but cows' milk shouldn't be given as a drink until they're 12 months
