Description

Little Gem lettuce produces compact, tight heads of creamy, buttery leaves with a clean flavour, ideal for small-space gardening and containers. This quick-growing, hardy variety is perfect as a catch-crop while you wait for slower vegetables and reaches about 30cm in height. Product Care InstructionsLettuce is a fast-growing, easy crop that thrives in beds, borders, and containers. With many varieties to choose from, you can enjoy crisp, fresh leaves for months. Sow seeds little and often for a continuous harvest, keeping soil moist to prevent bolting. Pick leaves as needed or harvest whole heads for delicious homegrown salads. Indoor Sowing Fill modular trays with quality seed compost and sow one seed per module. Keep compost moist using capillary matting or gentle watering. Place trays in a bright, warm spot, avoiding direct sun. Once Professional Grower Plugs show true leaves or fill the modules, they’re ready to harden off. Planting Out Harden off Professional Grower Plugs over 7–14 days, then transplant into pots, beds, or borders. Allow 30cm between plants to give space for heads to form. Outdoor Sowing Direct sow from March to July, 1cm deep in rows 30cm apart. Thin Professional Grower Plugs to 30cm, using the thinnings in salads. Companion Planting Grow lettuce with chives or spring onions to deter aphids, or marigolds to discourage slugs. Plant under taller crops like tomatoes for dappled shade that keeps leaves crisp. Harvesting For the freshest flavour, harvest in the morning when leaves are cool and hydrated.
