Description

Unwins Sweet Pea Seeds 'Our Heroes' is an heirloom variety named to honour the heroes of the Covid-19 pandemic. It produces upright standard petals with profuse carmine-magenta flaked blooms and a strong, spicy scent, making it perfect for summer borders, containers and cut flowers. Plants reach about 1.8m and flower from May to August. Sow seeds in pots of quality seed compost in October–November or late January–April; soften or nick the seed coat and keep compost moist in a warm greenhouse, conservatory or cold frame to aid germination. Harden off seedlings or plugs before transplanting to a sunny, sheltered spot with moist, well-draining fertile soil enriched with compost or manure. Space plants about 25cm apart, provide canes or a wigwam for support, pinch out main shoots at about 10cm to encourage bushy growth, water during dry periods and feed with a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser. Dead-head regularly to prolong flowering and maintain plant health.

Product Care InstructionsSow seeds in pots filled with quality seed compost during October–November or late January–April. To aid germination, soften seeds by placing them on a damp towel or in vermiculite until they swell. Tough seeds can be lightly nicked opposite the ‘eye’ to let moisture in. Place pots in a warm greenhouse, conservatory, or cold frame, keeping soil moist but not waterlogged. Harden off Professional Grower Plugs before transplanting to a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil enriched with compost or manure. Plant around 10 inches (25cm) apart, securing each to canes or a wigwam. Regular watering during dry periods supports healthy growth and abundant blooms. Encourage strong, bushy plants by pinching out the top of main shoots when around 4 inches (10cm) tall. Feed with a potassium-rich liquid fertiliser to boost flowers and tie plants gently to supports as they grow. Dead-head faded flowers throughout the season to prolong flowering and maintain plant health.
