Description

Marshalls Garden Pennisetum alopecuroides f. viridescens produces bright green foliage and soft, purple-tinged, fluffy flowerheads in late summer, flowering from September to November. This elegant evergreen grass suits sunny, well-drained sites and grows to around 50cm. Sow in trays of pre-watered seed compost and cover lightly, keeping trays in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse; allow 2-3 weeks for germination. When seedlings are large enough, transplant into 12cm (5in) pots using a well-draining compost with added grit, acclimatise gradually, and plant out after frost about 50cm apart. Equally suited to large pots, mixed borders and larger-scale planting, the flower spikes are also good for cutting.
