Description

Marshalls Garden Sunflower ‘Yellow Pygmy’ is a compact sunflower perfect for patios, containers or the front of borders, producing lemon-yellow blooms with brown centres from July to October. Sow indoors in March–April in 7–8cm pots: press seeds 1cm deep into seed compost, keep at 15–20°C in a propagator or cover with cling film, then grow on at a minimum of 10°C. Sow outdoors April–May at 1.5cm depth in pre-watered soil; keep soil moist until seedlings establish and thin as required. Gradually harden off plants for 2–3 weeks before planting out, water well until established, and provide full sun and well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Flowers are popular with pollinators, make lovely cut blooms, and produce edible seeds from mature heads—hang the dried heads in a warm, ventilated room, remove seeds and store in a dry cloth bag for eating.
