Description

Marshalls Garden Centaurea scabiosa (great knapweed) is a native British wildflower producing gorgeous purple, thistle-like flowers from July to September that bees and other pollinators love. It thrives on poor, dry, well-drained soils, is hardy and self-seeds to form a wildlife-friendly border. Sow indoors in trays of pre-watered seed compost, cover lightly and keep at 15-20°C with germination in about 2 weeks. Transplant to 8cm pots when large enough, acclimatise outdoors and plant out in a sunny spot approximately 25cm apart after frost risk; sowing in autumn and overwintering in a cold frame gives earlier flowering.
