Description

Sambucus nigra 'Black Tower' is a compact, narrow-grown shrub prized for its dark burgundy leaves and clusters of scented pink flowers in June. Best planted in full sun to maintain rich leaf colour, it thrives in moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. Supplied as a 3L plant, it reaches around 2.5m/8ft and suits smaller borders or mixed shrub beds. Plant year-round when conditions allow: dig a hole twice as deep and three times as wide as the rootball, mix in soil improver for heavy soils and add plant feed before backfilling. Position the plant at the same level as in its pot, firm the soil and water thoroughly. Cut back stems to ground level each spring, mulch with compost or well-rotted manure, and trim in summer if needed. Plants are sent pot-grown and may be leafless or yellow in autumn and winter but are healthy and ready to plant.
