Description

Squash 'Uchiki Kuri' (Onion Squash) produces striking teardrop-shaped fruits with bright orange skin and a smooth, butter-coloured texture. Each fruit weighs around 1.5 kg and offers a rich chestnut flavour that excels in roasting, soups and casseroles. Sow outdoors from May once frosts have passed, or start indoors and plant out when the soil warms. Sow 2-3 seeds per station at 2.5 cm depth and thin to the strongest seedling; allow about 100 cm between plants. Enrich soil with compost or well-rotted manure and feed with a high-potash fertiliser every 10-14 days once flowering begins. Harvest when stems become dry and corky, then leave fruits in the sun or on a windowsill for 10-14 days to harden skins for storage.
