Description
This is a favourite vegetable in Italy and it is very quick to grow. Generally the whole plant is harvested and leaves, stems and flower buds are all eaten. It is not actually a broccoli hence its many other names such as rapini, rappone, rabe and turnip broccoli.Sow outdoors thinly, from February to September, where they are to crop, 1.5cm deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30cm between rows. Early and late sowings benefit from cloche protection.Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Thin out to 25cm apart. Transplant thinnings if required. Water well until plants are established. Regular sowings, made every two to three weeks, will ensure a continuous supply. Plants mature faster in warmer weather.Harvest from May to November.
