Description

Spirodela polyrhiza, commonly known as greater duckweed or common duckmeat, is a small but remarkable plant that thrives on the surface of freshwater environments. Despite its tiny size, this native North American species plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and balance of ponds and slow-moving waters. Each plant forms a smooth, round disc, typically 0.5 to 1.0 cm wide, with a vibrant green upper surface and a deep red underside.

It forms dense colonies that float freely, absorbing nutrients through minute roots that dangle beneath the water's surface. During the fall, Spirodela polyrhiza produces turions, dense bud-like structures that sink and lie dormant through winter, only to germinate in spring and restart the plant's life cycle.
