EXTRAORDINARY J.J. CALE BROADCAST RECORDING FROM 1994 Born in 1938, J.J. Cale, considered by the likes Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock". Cale was also one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz. The five albums J.J. released between 1972 and 1979 remain among the finest records of the 1970s and are still championed today by fans old and new. But Cale remained a composer and performer of great material through the 1980s and 1990s too, right up until his untimely death in 2013.In August 1994, Cale put out his 11th studio album Closer To You, on the French label, Detabel, a record of which Allmusic said; €œWith the dazzling Closer to You, J.J. Cale finds ever-newer surprises in his own remarkable corner of the musical world.€ In the wake of the record€™s release the sometimes-reluctant Cale went out on the road to promote his new set, and in early October he played three nights at London€™s Hammersmith Apollo. The second of these dates, performed on October 6th, was recorded for live FM transmission across the UK, and back home in the US too.
