Since 1912 the Osborn family have tended vineyards in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Today fourth generation family member Chester makes distinctive wines using traditional methods both in the vineyard and the winery. Small batches of grapes are crushed gently and then transferred to open fermenters. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation, the wine is basket pressed and then aged on lees in a mixture of new and used French oak for 12 to 18 months. Joseph Osborn was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable. In 1912 he made the hard decision to sell his horses to purchase the d'Arenberg property.

A lifted, aromatic nose with luscious plum and red berry aromas. The palate is soft and cuddly and concludes with some firm tannin and acidity. There's flavours of mulberry, pomegranate, dried herbs and earth, with a rustic and wild finish.

Vinification Details

Grapes undergo a mixture of machine and hand harvesting, determined by the structure of the vineyard. The bulk of harvesting occurs at night-time to avoid high temperatures and retain freshness. The three varieties ripen at different rates, so the harvest period is extended form late February to early April. Specific harvest time for each block is determined through sensory analysis to ensure perfect flavour development along with ripe tannins and balanced acidity.

History

Joseph Osborn was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable. In 1912 he made the hard decision to sell his horses to purchase the d'Arenberg property.

Regional Information

A wet winter in McLaren Vale with July, August and September being above average in rainfall. October, November and December were below average and January, February and March were bone dry. Temperatures were mild until late January. A few hot days and nights brought the ripening forward with slight sacrifice of acidity. The above average temperatures of February and March and the dryness made everything ripen relatively quickly.
