Vinification Details

  • 2015 was a great year in Ningxia. This Cabernet Sauvignon is made with grapes from vines between 12 - 18 years old. The wine is naturally smooth enough to be enjoyed immediately.

  • Chateau Changyu Moser has its roots in 1892, when Chinese diplomat Zhang Bishi imported more than 500,000 vines from the US and Europe, paving the way for modern Chinese wine production. In 2013, 15th generation (XV) Austrian winemaker Lenz M Moser V became involved with this historic winery, imparting 1,000 years of wine heritage and launching Chateau Changyu Moser XV. His focus on vineyard management, blending and ageing has taken the quality of these wines to the next level, offering a shining example of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Regional Information

  • Ningxia lies approximately 1,330 kilometres west of Beijing, on the fringes of the Gobi desert and feeding off the Yellow River. The grapes have ideal growing conditions in the Helen Mountains Region at 1,100 metres above sea level. With the arid nature of the land and around 3,000 sunlight hours during the growing season (compared with Bordeaux's 2,052 hours average), the berries are allowed to fully ripen. The desert, with its cold nights, helps the wines to retain their freshness.

Good quality claret from an unexpected region

5 stars

Review from

This is an excellent claret. It is medium bodied and reasonably complex. Good fruit flavours and enough "bite" to suiggest it will keep and improve for a while. At this price I think it is really good value and I will be buying again (already have done). But if you can get a case deal, it's a steal. My feeling is that this winery has more to give and I will be watching closely. More please.

Good but not great

Review from

The big build up in the write up on this wine promised a meeting of old vines imported from Portugal and grown in China for well over 100 years, then brought up to date with the Moser family wealth of 13 generations of wine growing experience in Portugal. But apart from the label being written partially in Chinese there isn't really anything particularly stand out. I would prefer a good Douro at similar money. I tried it with the cork just pulled, then left to breathe for an hour and then for several hours more. Not any noticeable improvement. Its not unpleasant, indeed quite drinkable, just a bit of a let down after the description. If they had been more honest I most likely would have given a four star rating. And a £1 less a bottle would be more realistic.
