Runway inspiration Stitch Sensation

SS17 saw swathes of embroidered designs sashaying down the runway. Dolce & Gabbana went under the sea while Altuzarra looked to lemons. Embroidered florals also proved popular as seen at Jason Wu and Emporio Armani as Christopher Kane took a more abstract approach to embroidery

#1
Start simple
Embroidery can be slow work so choose a design you can build up. Floral designs can be added to over time but still look great in the early stages.

#2
Draw your design in chalk first
This makes stitching easier and gives you a better idea of how it is going to look before you put needle to fabric. It’s also much easier to alter the design at this stage.

#3
Use an embroidery hoop to hold fabric taut
This makes both hand and machine embroidery much easier and neater for a professional finish.

#4
For hand embroidery it’s important to master the stitches
Start with a simple running stitch then head to YouTube for tutorials on how to back, chain and split stitch and then practice.

#5
Don’t forget embellishments
Work beads and sequins into your design for a personal touch.
