Tasting Notes

Taken over by Jean-Christophe Mau in 2004, the quality of Chateau Brown has been on the rise ever since; With the 2009 vintage Jean-Christophe has taken the quality to a whole new level; The purity and sheer enjoyment this wine gives makes this one of the bargains of the vintage - Deep and rich, with succulent blackcurrant flavours which melt into roasted spice and coffee notes on the finish; Can be enjoyed immediately, or left to mature for the next decade James Griswood - Wine Buyer.

Expert Opinion

What our expert says

16.5/20 Jancis Robinson

The 50-hectare estate of Château Brown has enjoyed a long heritage of fine wine-making; It has gone from strength to strength in recent years under the ownership of the Mau family and the involvement of the famous Stephane Derenoncourt as consultant winemaker. Its 58 acres of vineyards are devoted to the the classic Bordeaux red grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot; Château Brown wines have received many wine awards and accolades across several vintages

Regional info

Pessac-Léognan, one of the oldest winemaking regions of Bordeaux, lies on the left bank of the Garonne just south of the city of Bordeaux itself. It is famous for its "gravelly" soil - In fact the word "Graves" (the name for the wider region of which it is part) means "gravel" in French. As with the Medoc appellations to the north, Cabernet Sauvignon tends to be the predominent grape but the wines here often also have a higher proportion of Merlot in the blend. The wines of Pessac Leognan are typically characterised by their tobacco-like aroma and earthy flavours
