Fermentation took place with natural yeast at between 26°C to 30°C. Once the must reached the desired degree of sweetness (usually within 48 hours), fortification took place with the addition of grape spirit at 77% alcohol by volume. The grapes were processed in traditional 'lagar'.
Port is produced in the mountainous Douro Valley in northern Portugal. The Douro Valley was the world's first demarcated wine region (1756). Port takes its name from the city of Porto where the wines are matured.
It's a region of extremes, long hot summers alternate with cold winters and a low average rainfall. The terrain is rugged, the vines planted in schist soil under terraces because of the very steep slopes. Grape yields are amongst the lowest of any major wine-producing region in the world, but as elsewhere, low quantity translates into very high quality.
Store horizontally in a cool, dark place. This wine can be enjoyed now or carefully stored for up to 10 years from purchase. Once open, drink within 5 days.
This wine is ideal for drinking now but can be kept for up to 10 years
