In 1985, a group of top winemakers from Rioja came together with a plan: to make Rioja from single estates as they do in Bordeaux.
This particular wine is made from grapes grown in vineyards surrounding a local monastry, hence the name. The result is heavenly, with ripe black fruits, mocha and even a trace of liquorice.
Fantastic with lamb.
This wine is ideal for drinking now but can be kept for up to 5 years
Jamie Goode - S Magazine, Sunday Express 13/04/2014
Of the 2010 vintage, Jamie Goode said: “Behind the curious metal label lurks a first-rate, traditional-style rioja. It’s dense, warm and oaky, with lovely sweet black fruits and a good partner for lamb.”
Barón de Ley is a winery founded in 1985 by a small group of Rioja wine professionals and who started a project of innovative and unique characteristics in this prestigious DOCa. The original Baron de Ley project was based on the idea of developing a purely “vineyard driven” winery, oriented to the production of high quality wines from own vineyards. The other main guideline behind the project was to develop and implement a new style of “modern” Rioja wines; wines of deeper colour, structure and concentration, in line with what today’s most discerning consumers are looking for. With this objective in mind, the winery specialised in Reserva wines from the start.
Finca Monasterio is made from grapes exclusively coming from the vineyards around our XVI century benedictine monastery in Mendavia (Rioja Baja). Planted in 1.985, this vineyard has already got to its optimum age for top quality productions, furthermore bearing in mind our demanding viticultural practices, involving canopy management, restrictive pruning’s and drastic green harvestings to reduce the yields to 4.000 kgrs./Ha.
