Of the 2013 vintage, Jilly Goolden said: ""A classic sparkling french wine with a great pedigree from Limoux - in the Languedoc province in the South of France - which claims to be the first sparkling wine ever produced in the 16th century by innovative monks. This has had a bit ageing - it’s at 2013. Good fizz becomes toastier and more mellow with ageing. It’s darker in colour and the smell is reminiscent of burnt paint. Funnily enough, this is appealing. The taste is creamy and mouth-coatingly smooth, nutty and full-bodied. Its individual and pretty nice. 7/10 "
In 1531, the Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint-Hilaire were producing a still wine made with Mauzac, the local grape variety, and discovered the 2nd fermentation in bottle and the Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest sparkling wine in the world, was born. Mauzac, the main grape variety of Blanquette is specific to the Limoux area, locally it is known as “Blanquette”, due to a fine white down which forms on its leaves.
