In recycling we trust

Recycle cards and save our woods says Corrie star Samia Smith

Who says season's greetings are just for Christmas? Throughout January you can recycle all your unwanted cards at special bins in store*. Recycling the cards generates money, which the Woodland Trust uses to create new woods throughout the UK.

Coronation Street star Samia Smith, who is backing this year's campaign, says, 'It's such a waste to throw away your Christmas cards when all you have to do is take them down to your local store. I try to be green at home – we recycle all of our bottles and have colour-coded bin bags for our rubbish. And at work they recycle our scripts so, you never know, your loo roll could have once been a Coronation Street storyline.'

Bag for life

Charlotte Church uses reusable bags

Celebrities like Charlotte Church (right) are backing the increasing move to reusable bags, and Jutexpo, the world's largest manufacturer of eco-friendly jute bags and supplier to Tesco, has been named a green business pioneer in the Barclays Green Leaders in Business Awards. Jutexpo was set up in 2002 by Barrie Turner, working with independent jute farmers to produce – so far – over 12 million bags.

Did you know? People use an average of 216 plastic bags each per year – that's four each week. It could be reduced rapidly if everyone bought two jute bags a year.
