They were equipped with locally produced Rolls-Royce Spey engines, modern electronics, and a modified construction that allowed the use of smaller aircraft carriers such as the HMS Ark Royal. They were among the most technically advanced aircraft of their time.For many years, RAF phantoms patrolled across Europe, stationed in both the UK and West Germany. During the Falklands War, they played an important role in the defense of the archipelago - first from a base on Ascension Island and later from the airport at Port Stanley.
