Rich and exotic
This is a hearty, warming red that i've had before and makes me quite nostalgic. I actually opened this on my birthday and it was equally delicious with steak and peppercorn sauce as it was with my sweet and sticky chocolate cake. This is a real treat of a wine - rich, disarming, with a tobacco taste that makes it seem almost smokey. It's got the most gorgeous, plummy, full complexion that looks wonderful in a crystal glass. You can really taste the tannin and, even though it's pretty heavy, it doesn't take long to polish off a mellow glass. The Old Bush Vine is an exotic, exciting, persuasive red that is a special treat or the perfect end to a difficult day with some stilton and crackers.
Lovely and savoury
What a lovely delightful fruity wine. Not too sweet, not too tart. In fact, I would place it more on the savoury side. I was pleasantly surprised with this Grenache. It isn't a red I would normally choose but this was an absolute delight. It would accompany a meaty type dish like lamb or roast perfectly. Especially with the plum notes that are easily detected in the wine.
As soon as I had my first taste of this I knew it was something special, there was a big allspice and raspberry pie flavour which I thought was fantastic. Having much of this wine with roast pork and cracking was a great move as the savoury food and rich, fruity wine were perfect together. I can't recommend this enough, superb.
Stunning Grenache - gorgeous.
Wow - this is something really special - from old bush vines 35-80 years old !! I'm a big fan of Grenache and I usually get them from southern France eg. the Languedoc area. But this one knocks them for six - such powerful fruit but in such an elegant and silky structured wine. A lighter medium purple colour belies both the power and intensity of this wine. A nose of some richness with red berry aromas with hints of woodspice and pepper. From the first mouthful this is an absolute joy to drink - a fabulous richness of fruit but an elegant luxuriant texture, with well rounded tight structure, and a delicious finish that goes on forever - start, mid, and end palate are harmoniously combined to produce a really elegant and composed wine. I'm completely blown away - this is awesomely delicious - a top job wine. Even 3 days after opening, it was still tight but deliciously harmonious. This could become my new house red as it represents excellent value for money. And is simply gorgeous.
Best Grenache tasted so far this year!
Old Bush Vine Granache 2013. 14.5% abv. Screw cap. Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans. Sourced from low yielding Gnarly Bush Vines. Beautiful, simple, classy label with a picture of a corkscrew. Opened the bottle to release a bouquet of blackcurrants and plums with a hint of oak. Thought this wine should be allowed to stand at room temperature and breathe, as everything about it exuded quality and said it was going to be good. I poured myself a glass. Light in colour, dark with fruits, a touch of earth from the Barossa soil and a pinch of French oak.. A full spectrum of flavour. Dry at first, releasing blackcurrant and berry fruits interlaced with vanilla, oak and pepper in the mouth. It was delightful. I had to remind myself it was 14.5%, and reluctantly leave some for the following evening. This was the nicest Granache I have tasted so far this year. I will buy again, it is worth it's price tag. .
A superior wine - wonderful
Super design, sophisticated and understated. On pouring you can observe a wonderfully rich dark and yet utterly clear cherry red wine. A fascinating and enigmatic nose of dark oaked fruit and winter berries with whisps of black liquorice, cinnamon and a wonderful spice that envelops your senses. Intoxicating. A sincere responsive wine with grace and eminence - structured, penetrating and tempting with a charming and smooth flavour an attractive exactness of fruit, gentle oaked tannins and an elongated and penetrating refined finish liberating smoked cherries.
An Aussie Beauty
Big fan of Yalumba wines, whenever I see the name on a bottle of wine I know it’s going to be good and this bottle is no different, classy and distinctive. The wine itself when poured is translucent but still a vivid red colour, light to medium bodied with an intense aroma of red fruits especially cherries and redcurrants, kind of reminds me of cherry drop sweets I had as a kid, there was also a smokey herbal thing going on that was pleasant. On first sip, again the red cherries are dominant with some raspberries but this time mixed with vanilla giving it a slight sweet taste although still with a bit of tartness and acidity making this a very subtle fruit bomb. Herbs and maybe some floral notes are also there with soft tannins and a terrifically long finish. I liked it a lot and all the people I shared it with enjoyed it as well, even confirmed white wine drinkers. I would say another winner from the ever reliable Yalumba, I would recommend this whole heartedly.
The nose gives off clean deep fruit notes pairing rich red cherry with vanilla and violets from subtle oak influence. In conjunction with both the deep colour of the wine and the visible tears on the glass (betraying the alcohol level which clocks in at 14.5%), it prepares you for what could be a huge wine. What actually transpires is a full, rounded body, paired with an appealing acidity which glides the wine through your palate with such smoothness that it’s a pleasure to drink. In the mouth, the red fruits are now more towards berry and currants, with a little spice and warmth from the alcohol helping the fine tannins. This is all at once juicy, chunky, subtle and extremely precise with its concentrated fruits. For me it truly melted over the palate and if tasted blind, I’m not sure I would have had the alcohol as high as it is. That said, there is a warmth from the alcohol that allows this wine to linger in the mouth for some time after. Delicious.
