Vinification Details

  • Once the grapes have been received and crushed in the winery, the must is left for cold maceration. This allows the aromas to develop and extracts colour from the skins. The fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature, between 25 and 28° C and then the wine goes through a malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks .

History

  • Rioja is a region in Spain with a long, glorious vinicultural history. Rioja wine, especially the red, has been well known for centuries as Spain’s flagship's wine. Rioja was the first Spanish wine region to obtain DO status in 1925. In 1991, it was promoted to DOCa (Qualified Designation of Origin), a higher category reserved for wines maintaining a proven consistency and quality over a long period of time.

Regional Information

  • The production area included in the Denomination of Origin Rioja is located in La Rioja, Álava and Navarra. Rioja DOCa is known primarily for its reds. Most bodegas still use their own formulas for blending red wines with at least three grapes, the most important of which is Tempranillo. Today they offer a broad range of styles. Wines include varietals; blended wines which are shifting the emphasis from oak to fruit; and, at the top end of the market, the Reservas and Gran Reservas.

I would have been disappointed if I paid full money for this wine as it was hit and miss, some bottles ok, others sharp.

Vega Roja Rioja

5 stars

This is an excellent medium bodied,un-oaked Rioja . We use it for everyday drinking but it also stands up well alongside many more expensive wines for any occasion. It's very good value - so no increases please due to this review !!

Bit mixed

2 stars

So far I have tasted 3 out of the six bottles purchesed. The first was really disappointing as it must have corked and had a fizzy taste. The second was good and the third which is currently being consumed is acceptable but could not be classed as a favourite.

Easy drinking

5 stars

A very enjoyable Rioja, slips down so easily. Not at all heavy and full of red berry fruit flavours, light on the palate. I think everybody would enjoy this!

Excellent!!!

Excellent value for money. This wine is superb with rich, meaty dishes and very easy to drink on its own. Mellow and fruity.

A very reasonable Rioja which improves when given the chance to breath for a short period.
