Vinification Details

  • Blanquette is predominantly made from the local grape variety Mauzac blended with Chardonnay and Chenin. The grapes are all hand harvested, only the first top quality pressing is used in this blend. The second fermentation takes place slowly in the bottle then the wine is aged for a minimum of 12 months producing a very aromatic wine.

History

  • In 1531, the Benedictine monks from the Abbey of Saint Hilaire were producing a still wine made with Mauzac, the local grape variety, and discovered the 2nd fermentation in bottle and the Blanquette de Limoux, the oldest sparkling wine in the world, was born. Mauzac, the main grape variety of Blanquette is specific to the Limoux area, locally it is known as “Blanquette”, due to a fine white down which forms on its leaves. In the local dialect Langue d'Oc Blanquette means white.

Sophistication (and Club Points Too!)

5 stars

A delightful wine, well presented and sure to delight eager Wino's, novice or hardcore enthusiasts alike. The Bubbles delight and grace the glass, as served and create an almost "Feel Good Factor". This Wine works! It doesnt get better than this and after the 3rd Bottle you will quickly realise that this offering from Tesco was excellent value. Its just a great shame that, at 75cl, I can only manage to squeeze out 3 glasses. Never-mind; open another bottle or order another case to keep the momentum going. There's really no need to look further than this one!

sophisticated and refreshing

5 stars

Originally I bought Blanquette de Limoux out of nostalgia, as I used to live not far from Limoux, but it is worth buying for its qualities, and I think a good Blanquette outclasses a poor Champagne every time. Made by the méthode champenoise, predominantly from the Mauzac ("blanquette") grape, with a small amount of Chardonnay and Chenin blanc, it is crisp, dry, fruity and refreshing - far more so that pure Chardonnay fizzes in my opinion, which can be a little flabby if not well made. Drink it as celebration or apéritif, but don't waste it on parties where people are just going to glug. Don't waste it, as it is delicious.

This wine is great for all occasions.

5 stars

Bought this wine with a view to give as present for my family opened one of the bottles to see if the taste was as good as the bottle said that was it the taste was absolutely gorgeous and the persons that got the bottles were also interested in buying it so that I have told them that they can order it for themselves at Tesco wine direct.

Excellent alternative to Champagne

5 stars

The monks knew what they were doing and this product in my opinion, rivals most champagnes. Crystal clear flavours of toasted brioche, bright, light and a pleasure to drink at any time. Value for money ever though tesco increased the price after the brilliant review on Saturday Kitchen!

Very well received.

I am not a wine drinker but my sister is. She loves champagne, prosecco and cava. I took her a bottle of this this morning as part of a birthday gift. I have just received a text from her saying how very very good this wine is. Her friend is sharing the bottle and completely agrees. I think they will be buying this in future.

Gorgeous!

I received this as a Christmas present last year and have been searching for it again since. When will you have this back in stock, Tesco?
