About us

From humble beginnings, Managing Director, Steve Cochrane, opened his first business in the North-East seaside town of Redcar in 1982. It was quirkily named, Sliced Tomatoes. This was a small boutique for the aspiring punk rocker to showcase his band’s unique dress style. Quickly, Steve realised he was better at business and fashion than he was at playing in a band and in 1984 the first Psyche boutique was born. Innovation was already top of Steve’s wish list as he brought high end designer brands such as Helmut Lang, Gucci, Dries Van Noten and Prada to the North East of England for the very first time. Customers couldn’t get enough and so a second store opened in 1988. This quickly became a landmark for the industrial town of Middlesbrough.In 2002, a local department store, E. Upton & Sons, got into financial difficulties and went into liquidation. Not one to miss an opportunity, Steve sold everything he owned to create his dream … a department store fashion destination with the feel, style and individuality of an independent boutique. He created 35,000 square feet of his dream with a mission to create the ultimate experience in retail theatre.Over the years Psyche has attracted great interest from many plaudits in the fashion industry and has won a string of awards along the way, including the much coveted Drapers Fashion Awards on two separate occasions, FHM magazine’s Retailer of the Year, GQ Magazine’s Best Menswear Shop and runner up to Harrods in Department Store of the Year 2012.Psyche is now also among Vogue magazine’s Top 100 Best British Shops voted ahead of Selfridges, Birmingham, and Harvey Nichols, Leeds, and has even achieved the accolade of 34th Best Shopping Website in the World by The Times.Steve has been personally invited by The British Fashion Council to meet HRH Prince Charles at St James’s Palace in his capacity as one of Britain’s top fashion retailers. Please be aware that charges and timings will vary for delivery to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isles of Scilly, Orkney, Shetland and other Scottish islands with deliveries taking up to 8 days for outlying areas. The actual delivery cost and timings will be displayed during checkout.

We dispatch our items from Monday to Friday using the following couriers: FedEx.

Delivery locations and exceptions

We ship to all areas of the UK. For outlying areas we will try to deliver to the timeframes above, but there may be some occasions when there might be a delay. In these circumstances we will contact you to let you know and keep you updated at all times.

Requirements to sign for delivery

All of our items will require a signature; please ensure you are available to sign for your order when it is delivered.

Missed delivery

If we try to deliver and you are not available our courier will leave a calling card to advise you about what to do next. This will detail how many further delivery attempts we will make before the items are returned to us and you may be able to pick up your item from your local depot if this is more convenient. If you would like us to help rearrange your delivery, please let us know.

Changed your mind?

That’s no problem. All of our Tesco Partners offer the same Tesco direct policy as a minimum, the full details of which can be found on our Returns Policy page.

Charges for returns

If you change your mind and wish to return your item you will need to pay for the cost of return. Of course, if the item you have received is damaged or faulty, we will cover the cost of the return.

All of our items can be returned by standard post.

Returns guidelines

Please let us have any original packaging, tabs, labels and accessories, and please package it all securely. If you’re returning an item because you’ve changed your mind, there may be a deduction from your refund if it has been damaged, opened more than necessary to check it’s working, or used more than reasonably expected.

Is your purchase faulty or damaged?

We do our best to make sure everything works perfectly, but if it doesn’t, please contact us. Within the first 28 days we will issue a replacement item to you. Outside of the first 28 days we will be able to advise on the options to repair, replace or refund your item.
