Hughes Electrical was founded in Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1921 by Frank Hughes, who trained as an electrical engineer after having served in the cavalry during the Great War. Originally, the company rewound industrial electrical motors for Lowestoft's once large fishing fleet, but in 1928 Frank bought his first shop. Here he built and sold radios, and the family lived over the shop for many years. The business was incorporated in 1946, but the following year Frank passed away, leaving his children, Peter, Phyllis and Jim, to take over the management of the company.
Ever the entrepreneurial company, Hughes were quick to introduce new technologies as they developed, such as televisions and labour saving kitchen appliances. By renting these products they became affordable for the typical household in the post-war austerity years. This early equipment was notoriously unreliable and the engineering background of the company meant it was well placed to develop a large service infrastructure to repair them. Geographic expansion soon followed and by the end of the century Hughes had over 30 shops and 5 service centres located throughout East Anglia. By then, management was into its 3rd generation under Robert and Jeremy Hughes, meaning the company was, and remains to this day, a true family business.
Expansion has continued into the next millennium and Hughes is now one of the country's largest specialist electrical retailer, and the 2nd largest provider of home entertainment and kitchen appliance rentals. In 2011, Hughes won the Domestic and General Internet Retailer of the year award. We were voted the best electrical website by 250,000 customers of Domestic and General. Our commercial division, Trade Electricals Direct (TED), is one of the country’s fastest growing and most respected business to business electrical suppliers. This division was awarded the contract to be the preferred supplier of kitchen appliances to the London 2012 Olympics, reflecting its gathering success. Hughes has expanded its retail footprint with the acquisition of Apollo 2000 in 2009, and Bennetts Retail in 2011, procuring several large out of town stores and greatly increasing the company’s expertise in the sale of kitchen appliances and IT equipment. The company has developed a 70,000 sq ft distribution facility in Thetford, which services all the shops, websites, trade centres and service centres, and further supports our commitment to service, with over 100 fully trained electrical engineers.
In 2011, Hughes Electrical celebrated its 90th birthday by winning both the EDP Business of the Year, which is East Anglia’s most prestigious business award, and the ERT Independent Electrical Retailer of the year, which is the industry’s most prestigious award. This success shows that the company’s motto of “inspiring customer loyalty through customer service” remains as relevant and true today as when Frank Hughes first founded the business more than 90 years ago.

Please be aware that charges and timings will vary for delivery to Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Isles of Scilly, Orkney, Shetland and other Scottish islands with deliveries taking up to 8 days for outlying areas. The actual delivery cost and timings will be displayed during checkout.
We use a combination of tracked courier services depending on the nature of the product and delivery selected at the point of purchase. You will be kept informed with delivery information by SMS and / or email. Express delivery is not available on deliveries in Scotland.
We dispatch orders from Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays.
Delivery locations and exceptions
Delivery is available on the UK mainland only, and deliveries in Scotland will take 2-3 days longer. Smaller items like vacuum cleaners, microwaves and radios can be delivered the next day. Large products like washing machines will be delivered in 3-5 days. While we will make every endeavour to deliver your products on time, we cannot accept liability for any incidental expenses caused by late, failed or damaged deliveries, or for any damage caused to property while delivering or installing your goods, or any loss of earnings caused.
Requirements to sign for delivery
All deliveries must be signed for. If no one is available to take in the delivery, the driver will attempt to deliver to a neighbour. This service is not available on all products.
Should the initial delivery attempt fail, a calling card will be left by the courier requesting that you contact them to arrange an alternative time or address. However, you can also contact the Hughes customer services team, who will be able to assist with arranging an alternative delivery slot.

Charges for returns
Please let us have any original packaging, tabs, labels and accessories, and please package it all securely. If you’re returning an item because you’ve changed your mind, there may be a deduction from your refund if it has been damaged, opened more than necessary to check it’s working, or used more than reasonably expected.
Should you wish to cancel your order, any goods supplied must be returned to Hughes, Inspections Dept, 3 Fison Way, Thetford, Norfolk, IP24 1HT, at your own expense within 14 days of your notice to cancel. We can arrange a collection on your behalf, below is an indication of the likely costs:

Is your purchase faulty?
We do our best to make sure everything works perfectly, but if it doesn’t, please contact us. Within the first 30 days we will issue a refund or replacement item to you. Outside of the first 30 days we will be able to advise on the options to repair, replace or refund your item.
Upon delivery, please check your goods for shortages or damage, and when you sign for the package, please make a note of any problems on the carrier’s consignment form. Please also report shortages or damages to us within 48 hours of taking delivery.
