Northern Italy: with James Davis

James Davis

James Davis is responsible for buying wines from Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Wine is part of everyday life in Italy, and there’s barely a corner of the country that doesn't boast its own particular interpretation of one, two or more grape varieties. Because of Italy's long history of making wine there are very close links between the country's food and its wines. In this issue we concentrate on the north, where Piedmont and Veneto are the two main wine regions.

Piedmont: a land of mists and hills

Piedmont lies in Italy’s northwestern corner, bordering France in the west and Switzerland in the north. Piedmont is best known for its reds. Barolo and Barbaresco are its most prestigious reds and are amongst Italy’s best wines.

Piedmont also produces lighter, great value wines from the Barbera and Dolcetto grapes for delicious everyday drinking. These reds are juicy and full of cherry and plum fruit.

It’s also home to some of Italy’s most popular wines, including Bardolino, Valpolicella, Prosecco, Soave and Pinot Grigio.
